PORTSMOUTH — Normally, Paul Keegan wouldn't be one for dramatic or iconic titles. Indeed, the owner of Portsmouth's 1 World Trading Company tends to strike those who meet him as equal parts humble and accessible. And while his store ¿ a catch-all for green and eco-friendly gifts, clothing, housewares and cleaning products -- can't help but reflect an unmistakable aura of idealism, a short conversation with Keegan himself is anything but pretentious.

But that was before local Portsmouth community radio station 101.5 WXGR decided to partner with Keegan on a series of "green tips," to be broadcast regularly on the world music-oriented channel. That's not to say Keegan's new gig suddenly turned him into Howard Stern -- quite the contrary. However, accepting the personality-driven nature of the medium for what it is, Keegan and WXGR director Rob Connelly knew they needed a persona that the eco-friendly Seacoast listener could easily identify with. After a few moments' thought, Keegan settled on a winner.

In three years, 1 World has undergone many changes. We have expanded to a second location, and then re-located our original location, all in an effort to bring fair trade, locally-made and green to our local community.

In order to continue 1 World's mission, we are consolidating our operation to the Portsmouth shop, and have closed the Nashua shop.

So as not to abandon our innovative Biokleen re-fill program in Nashua, we are moving our Biokleen re-fill station and products to Mother & Child Clothing and Gifts, in Greystone Plaza, 650 Amherst Street, Nashua.

Arts In Reach and 1 World Trading Co. may seem like an unlikely pair but it makes a lot of cents.

1 World Trading Co. is serving as a collection site for used ink jet cartridges and old cell phones to raise money for AIR, a nonprofit organization that builds self-esteem and resiliency in teen aged girls through art and performance workshops in Rockingham and Strafford counties.

Community members can drop off used ink jet cartridges and old cell phones along with chargers and batteries at 1 World Trading Co., 76 Congress St. AIR sends them to Planet Green, which pays AIR for each cartridge and cell phone it turns in.

Dear Friends,

Looking back at the week we shared together, I have a hard time finding one word that would describe the entire adventure. Words like, inspiring, awesome, spectacular, and wonderful all seem appropriate for most aspects of the trip, but not that "defining" word. After really searching the old cranium, my one word for the week would be Humbling.

I was humbled by the love of the environment, displayed by the participants in their daily lives and vocations.

I was humbled by the dedication of a volunteer staff that saw to our every need, anticipated and prepared for every detail, and allowed the riders to enjoy the experience to its fullest.

I was humbled by the singleness of purpose that catalyzed this special entourage as it rolled through the northern coast.

I was humbled by the activities of our speakers, there is some great work being done on Mothers behalf and it inspires all of us.

I was humbled by the hills, as much as I prepared, they still beat me more than once.

Most of all though, I was humbled by the landscape that unfolded around us and took us in. The vastness and grandeur of the nature we encountered was a constant reminder of why we are all here, why we work in this field, and a constant reward for our efforts.

Climate Ride 2009 brought attention to the issue of Climate Change and inspired those who participated. Climate Ride California 2010 focused our attention on the very nature of our planet, COEXISTENCE.....

It’s on the news every night, but most Americans still do not feel connected to the issue that could cause billions of dollars in environmental damage, massive societal upheaval, war, and famine. New research shows that if present trends continue, "the total cost of climate change will be as high as 3.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Four global warming impacts alone -- hurricane damage, real estate losses, energy costs, and water costs -- will come with a price tag of 1.8 percent of U.S. GDP, or almost $1.9 trillion annually (in today's dollars) by 2100." That is why it is vital to raise awareness and increase our understanding of the climate crisis. Climate, our energy use, and the effects on our environment are inextricably linked. You can begin to make a difference by supporting the work of Climate Ride’s non-profit beneficiaries.

We ride to support Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Green America and 1Sky. Your fundraising helps these beneficiaries continue to provide the critical services and education needed to address climate and energy issues. There are 2 ways you can help:

1. Buy a raffle ticket.

Paul is building a very special single speed to be raffled off to raise money for his Climate Ride.
Each raffle ticket that you purchase helps to create awareness of the issues surroundung Climate Change.

Raffle tickets are $5 each. The winner will be drawn in August, 2010, and may pick up the bicycle at 1 World Trading Co. in Portsmouth. The bicycle will be available for viewing at the 1 World/Green Alliance Ilse of Shoals Cruise on July 14, and then in the Portsmouth shop until August.

2. Make a donation.

This will be Paul's second Climate Ride and his 2nd time riding for the Green America team. He has seen first hand the momentum that hundreds of riders brought to bare when they arrived at the Capital Building. We need that kind of momentum to keep going, and so, he will ride his trusty single speed to San Francisco! He can't do it alone, Paul needs your help. PORTSMOUTH — When green retailer 1 World Trading Co. took off in Nashua following its March 2008 opening, owners Paul and Karen Keegan set their sites on Portsmouth.

A waning recession, government stimulus money that saved $10,000 in small business loan application fees, and the Seacoast's eco-friendly reputation enabled them to expand with a new location on Congress Street.

For Paul Keegan, who will run the Portsmouth shop while Karen manages the Nashua location, it's a perfect fit.

"I think people are more socially conscious here in Portsmouth," Paul Keegan said. "The education level, the caring level in this community seems to be very high, and I just think it's a good mix."

The store sells earth-friendly goods, including fair trade, recycled and locally made products.

"Our tag line is we're purveyors of goods that benefit the planet and the people who live on it," Keegan said. "We're above all a green store."

This is a week after the Climate ride: the carpeting is up, the foam all scraped off the floor, the walls painted the same beautiful color as the Nashua shop, the ceiling is painted and the lights have been replaced with high efficiency lights. The oak flooring is in place in the display windows and along the front of the shop!

Art Walk Nashua promises to be largest in the event's five-year history, according to this year's event chairman, Jay Minkarah.

The annual arts and cultural celebration, organized by City Arts Nashua, will be held Saturday from noon-6 p.m. and Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Art Walk Nashua offers an array of open studios, galleries and businesses accompanied by live musical performances, refreshments and other attractions.

Returning venues include the 1 World Trading Co., Maison De L'Art and Ikebana Flower.

I have just completed day 3 of #climateride09, and what an amazing day(on so many levels). Today I rode 67 miles to raise awareness about Climate Change. At 1 point a Red-Tailed Hawk circled above me and just sort of danced in the wind above me, for half a mile. I immediately felt safe and protected for the rest of my journey. As he finally set down on a tree branch, I waved and thanked him for looking over me. The people riding and supporting us are inspiring, the amount of knowledge, passion and collective accomplishments of this group is humbling. I am so honored to be here. Thanks to those of you who have contributed so far and for anyone else who may be ready to help, my fund raising page is open for the next few weeks(http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=691690). This is an amazing event that will bring the message to Capital Hill that Climate Change needs to be the focus of legislation NOW. I should mention that I would have had to go into debt with the Climate Ride Organization, if it were not for the other riders from the Green America team, especially, Bernard Brennon, who as a top fundraiser, was able to "cover" my balance. Green America networks/connects Eco-conscious companies from across the nation and basically produce a green version of the yellow pages. Go Team Green America!

A man of action

On the road again! I try to be a man of action when it comes to my beliefs, and as you know I beleive in everyones ability to make a difference. I'm about to meet 200 more people like me who choose to ride for change. I just left Boston via bus, and am scheduled to arrive NYC at 4pm. Bike and backpack safely under me. Laptop plugged in, and connecting with my social network . (For less than $20, I'm on a clean comfortable bus with free wifi.) I register for the Climate Ride 09 at the Central Park Zoo at 5:30. Then chill'n with the polar bears till dinner. Probably out eat a few of the bears, then catch my last nights sleep in a bed for the next 5 days. Ride starts at 7am. Roughly 60 miles a day of riding (pun intended- doing this on a single speed Re-Cycles bicycle.) Ride ends in DC, Wednesday, and I meet with Senator Judd Gregg Thursday morning. I want to say Thanks to all my family, supporters and followers. I'll keep the updates coming. Its all downhill from here!(Right?) Peace, Paul

What a great community event! We hosted San Francisco Kitchen at our shop tonight, during the Taste of Downtown Nashua. They served some DELICIOUS sushi, maki and curried chicken! The best part of the evening was the conversations and chatter with friends, customers and people we'd not met before!
It was great to see so many familiar faces and great to get to welcome so many new faces into our shop.

As awareness of fair trade grows, so do many misconceptions about fair trade. Below are some popular myths about fair trade and the realities behind them.
Myth: Fair Trade is about paying developed world wages in the developing world.
Reality: Fair wages are determined by a number of factors, including the amount of time, skill, and effort involved in production, minimum and living wages in the local context, the purchasing power in a community or area, and other costs of living in the local context. Wages are determined independently from North American wage structures and are designed to provide fair compensation based on the true cost of production.
Myth: Fair Trade siphons off American jobs to other countries.
Reality: Fair trade seeks to change the lives of the poorest of the poor who frequently lack alternative sources of income. As North American fair trade organizations grow, they employ more and more individuals in their communities. Most fair trade craft products stem from cultures and traditions which are not represented in North American production. Well, It was a fabulous honor to be nominated as Small Business of the Year by our fellow Chamber of Commerce members! We are sad to announce that we did not win the first place, however.
Thank you to the Chamber friends that nominated us! We are very proud to be considered one of the most community-minded small businesses in Greater Nashua.

NH's First "Green" Athletic Event was Held April 5.

The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter's 16th Annual Run for Food and Shelter was probably the 1^st ever certified “green” race in NH. It is my understanding that an organization named ReSport will do the certification. Another organization called Athletes for a Fit Planet was on site to provide education and guidance regarding the requirements for green certification.

By donating half, and selling the rest at wholesale cost, 1 World Trading Co. was able to provide the Soup Kitchen with $600 worth of compostable plates, cups and trash bags at a cost to the event organizers of only $170, essentially adding over $400 to the proceeds raised.

The goal was to have less than 1 lb of trash per race participant at the close of the event. It appeared to us that the goal was met or even exceeded. This was a very impressive undertaking and the Soup Kitchen volunteers and staff seemed to really embrace the idea of a green event.

Later that night, we recieved an e-mail message from Bruce Rayner of Athletes for a Fit Planet:

Karen,

Very nice to meet you and Paul today.

The total landfill waste produced by the event was 11.85 lbs. Everything else was diverted to recycling or compost. There were over 500 people in attendance. The waste/participant is about as close to zero-waste-to-landfill as you’ll find anywhere.

I’ll be compiling the certification evaluation of the race for ReSport tomorrow (www.resport.org).

The Nashua Soup Kitchen's 16th Annual Run for Food & Shelter is going green this year! We're looking at our carbon footprint and working to reduce it. Some of the things we will be doing:

*Having port-o-potties that use non-toxic, biodegradable solutions.
*Using local, organic and fair trade food products wherever possible.

Spring! time to get back on the bicycle!

Spring is here and it's time to stick to that resolution to ride or walk to work more often.

Just read in the Sunday Telegraph that the city will soon install bike racks on the fixed-route buses. This is great news for those of who live a bit to far to commute the whole way to work by bike, or who want to be able to have a bike at work to go for a ride at lunch time!
There are lots of opportunities here... You could ride to the grocery store and take the bus back to your neighborhood, for example!

We still need to encourage our City Leaders to make it a priority to make Nashua a more pedestrian/cyclist-friendly city, but this is a step in the correct direction.
